Postcard From Oputia: The Wreck Of The John Martin
Oil On Board
30 X 40 cm
An imaginary landscape from my Oputia series. The title of this painting refers to the artist John Martin (1789 - 1854) who was a great painter of grand apocalyptic visionary landscapes. He often used strong reds and strong chiaroscuro; the colours and style in this painting make a nod in that direction. So, "The Wreck Of The John Martin" is perhaps an allusion to the idea of the end of a style, a fashion for paintings in this romantic and dramatic style. More's the pity. This painting fits into my Oputia series of imaginary landscapes; in Oputia, of course, everyone survived the shipwreck.
